Local Tips Local Tips: Finding Flights

Finding the “best” flights to Costa Rica isn’t just about the lowest price; it’s about minimizing layovers and maximizing your time on the ground.

The 3-Month Window

During peak dates (Christmas/Easter) flights should be book 6-9 months out. For all other times, the “sweet spot” for price drops is usually 2-3 months before departure.

Terminal Transfers

The SJO domestic terminal is a separate building. Allow a 3-hour layover to clear customs and walk/shuttle to the local terminal.

Weather Delays

Flights to Costa Rica are often delayed during the rainy season (May-Nov) due to afternoon storms. Early morning flights are the most reliable.

  Shoulder Season Savings

Book for May, June, or November. You get “Green Season” prices and lush landscapes, but usually avoid the heaviest October rains.

  Set Regional Alerts

Don’t just track your home airport. Track major hubs like Miami (MIA), Houston (IAH), or LAX. Sometimes booking a separate cheap domestic flight to a hub saves $500+ total.

The Multi-City Hack

Fly into SJO and out of LIR. This allows you to traverse the country without ever doubling back to your starting point, saving you a full day of driving.
